Did you hear about the cross that trembled? That’s how the story of the Ermita de la Cruz del Milagro begins.

Welcome to the ruins of the Ermita de la Cruz del Milagro. This colonial building stands as a testament to Antigua’s rich history. It embodies the Barroco Antigüeño architectural style. This style was designed to resist earthquakes.

The Ermita de la Cruz del Milagro holds a special place in the hearts of Antigua’s residents. It’s linked to the legend of the “Cruz del Milagro”. People said this cross could tremble on its own. In 1736, Don Lorenzo de Paz donated a beautiful image of Jesus Nazareno to the Ermita. It was sculpted by master Alonso de la Paz y Toledo. Today, it is known as “Jesús Nazareno de los Milagros”.

Antigua Guatemala was once called Santiago de los Caballeros de Guatemala. It served as the capital of the Kingdom of Guatemala. This kingdom included most of Central America. It also encompassed parts of southern Mexico. Antigua was a major political, economic, and cultural center.

But disaster struck in 1773. The Santa Marta earthquakes devastated the city. The capital moved to Guatemala City. Yet, the survivors rebuilt their city and called it Antigua Guatemala. The Ermita de la Cruz del Milagro also suffered during this time.

In 1683, the original cross miraculously trembled, giving rise to the hermitage. The Nazareno was donated to the hermitage in 1736. This was after the hermitage was renovated in 1731.

In 1773, the earthquake damaged the Ermita de la Cruz del Milagro. In 1780, the statue of Jesus Nazareno left the Ermita. It was moved to the Beaterio de Indias and later to Santa Rosa. Finally, in 1859, it found its home in the Templo de San José.

The city decided to build a permanent outdoor amphitheater in front of the ruins in 1973. The Ermita provides a stunning backdrop for concerts and festivals.

Though partially in ruins, the Ermita de la Cruz del Milagro continues to inspire. It reminds us of Antigua’s resilience. It stands as a symbol of faith and art. It echoes with stories of miracles and tremors. It connects us to the past.
