Here stands the Erlöserkirche, Hamburg’s first rebuilt church after World War II. It symbolizes resilience amid destruction. The predecessor to today’s Erlöserkirche had its foundation laid in 1902. Borgfelde parish had been established two years prior. It separated from St. Georg parish. The original church was consecrated in November 1903. Georg Thielen designed the neo-Romanesque building with a central dome. Fernando Lorenzen created a square interior with a vestibule. Altar, pulpit, and organ held central positions. Pews and galleries surrounded this core. The old church accommodated 600 worshipers.

Tragedy struck during the Hamburg firestorm in July 1943. The old Erlöserkirche was destroyed. Its ruins were demolished in March 1950. The present-day Erlöserkirche was consecrated on November 9, 1952. It was the first new church in Hamburg after the war. The date was one day before the 49th anniversary of its predecessor’s dedication. A memorial stands on the church’s east wall since June 1955. Hans Kock designed it to honor the dead of both World Wars. The Erlöserkirche’s tower was completed in 1957. The bells were consecrated that May. The community center was erected in 1961. A daycare center opened in 1974. The old Erlöserkirche’s parsonage, located on Bürgerweide, survived the war. However, it was sold in 1990.

Since the reunification of St. Georg and Borgfelde parishes in 2004, the Erlöserkirche belongs to the St. Georg-Borgfelde parish along with the Holy Trinity Church St. Georg. Today, members of Christ Ambassadors Ministries International worship here. Also, the African Christian Church Hamburg holds services every Sunday in the Erlöserkirche. The International Gospel Service in Hamburg occurs once a month. It happens on the second Sunday at 11:00 AM. This service is central to the African Center Borgfelde’s activities. It is a welcoming place for Africans and Germans alike. These intercultural activities started in 2005. The pastoral care office for Africans in Hamburg was located in the Erlöserkirche’s tower.

Henry Schlote and Friedrich Richard Ostermeyer designed the current building with a gable roof. The design is deliberately simple. Small balconies on the tower and the memorial on the east wall serve as the only ornamentation. The archways are the only nod to pre-modern traditions. The interior mirrors the church’s simple exterior. It features a flat ceiling, three naves and resembles a Romanesque basilica. A round arch marks off the altar area. Tall windows use plain glass. The simple wooden cross behind the altar stands out. Ursula Querner carved the pulpit’s walls. Fritz Fleer created the reliefs on the baptismal font. They depict Jesus’ baptism in the Jordan and Noah’s Ark.

The Erlöserkirche stands not just as a place of worship. It embodies Hamburg’s enduring spirit. It is a testament to faith. It symbolizes community amid adversity. The Erlöserkirche continues to serve a diverse congregation. It fosters intercultural understanding. It offers a space for reflection and renewal.
