The Erlöserkirche in Kunnerwitz, a small village just outside of Görlitz, is a hidden gem. It stands tall and proud, a testament to the enduring faith and artistic spirit of the community. The church was built in the 1830s in the style of the Roman basilica, with rounded arches and a flat wooden ceiling. It’s interesting that the 39.5- meter high tower is located on the east side of the church. This was deliberate, to make the church more open to the village. You can see the altar on the west side under the large window.
The Erlöserkirche has a fascinating history. The village of Kunnerwitz was once part of a larger parish in the surrounding region. In the 16th century, it was controlled by the Roman Catholic church, and the church in neighboring Leschwitz became the central place of worship. However, after the Reformation, the people of Kunnerwitz yearned for a church of their own.
It was not until the 19th century, after the region came under Prussian rule, that the community finally received permission to build their own church. The church was meticulously planned by the renowned Prussian architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel. The construction was completed in 1839 and the church was dedicated to the Redeemer. Like many churches, the Erlöserkirche’s bell tower suffered during war times. The church was eventually renovated and reopened in 1981, but this time the interior was split in two, forming an upstairs and downstairs space.
The church is a significant part of the community and hosts regular services, concerts, and cultural events. Step inside and immerse yourself in the history and legacy of the Erlöserkirche.
