A shiver runs down your spine but it is not just from the cold air. This is the Erika-Heß-Eisstadion. It is a place where history and icy excitement meet.

Welcome to the Erika-Heß-Eisstadion in Berlin. This arena is more than just an ice rink. It is a landmark with a story that stretches back decades. It is named in honor of Erika Heß. She was a former mayor of the Wedding district.

In 1967 the Erika-Heß-Eisstadion first opened its doors. Back then it was known as Eisstadion Wedding. For years it was an open-air ice rink. A roof protected skaters from the elements. In 1982 and 1983 the stadium was renovated into a multipurpose hall.

Imagine the roar of the crowd. Picture the speed of the ice hockey players. Feel the thrill of figure skating. The Erika-Heß-Eisstadion has seen it all. It is home to FASS Berlin. This ice hockey club has been playing here since 1972. The arena has a capacity of 2800 spectators. 1400 of these are seated.

Before 1973 the Berliner Schlittschuhclub also used this ice rink. They temporarily moved here because their Sportpalast was outdated. The Deutschlandhalle was often occupied.

But the Erika-Heß-Eisstadion is not just for sports. It is a versatile space. Here you can find ice skating shows. You can even see dog shows. This adaptability makes it a true community hub.

Did you know that this arena played a crucial role during the COVID-19 pandemic? In 2021 it became a Corona vaccination center. From January to August people received the Moderna vaccine here. The ice rink served as a place of healing.

In 2009 after the demolition of the Deutschlandhalle the ECC Preussen Juniors temporarily moved to the Erika-Heß-Eisstadion. They even used a hangar at the former Tempelhof Airport for training.

The Erika-Heß-Eisstadion has two ice surfaces. One is inside the stadium. The other is outside. Usually the outside ice surface is open to the public.

The Erika-Heß-Eisstadion is easily accessible. It is located at Müllerstraße 185. You can reach it by bus or train. There are parking spaces. But it can be difficult to find a free one.

The Erika-Heß-Eisstadion stands as a testament to Berlin’s history. It is a place where sport community and resilience come together. As you leave take a moment to appreciate the many stories held within these walls.
