Founded in 1969 Ericsson Playground occupies 1.06 acres in Greenpoint Brooklyn. This large playground sits at the intersection of Manhattan Avenue and Leonard Street. It’s named after the Swedish-American inventor John Ericsson 1803-1869. A nearby junior high school also bears his name. Ericsson immigrated to America at the request of the United States Navy. He supervised the construction of the U S S Princeton. This experimental frigate boasted cutting-edge screw propellers smokestacks ventilators and optical instruments. Later Ericsson designed the U S S Monitor for the Union Navy during the Civil War.

Imagine children playing amidst the playground equipment. The laughter and squeals echo through the trees. The park’s design showcases various recreational activities. There are playgrounds for younger children. Older children enjoy basketball courts and handball courts. The park offers a mix of active and passive recreational opportunities. There is space for relaxed play and quiet contemplation. The original design included provisions for field hockey. That feature has since been removed.

The history of Ericsson Playground is intertwined with the community. In its early years the park underwent significant transformations. The initial development faced challenges including a lack of investment and political will. The space was once an undesirable area known as Paddy’s Patch. This area was later transformed through community efforts and the assistance of relief workers during the Great Depression. The park was dedicated with a grand ceremony. It was officially named Leiv Eiriksson Square in honor of the Norse explorer. However this dedication did not initially bring about significant improvements to the park. The park continued to languish as a dumping ground for many years. The grand opening was delayed because of a lack of investment.

The eventual renovation of Ericsson Playground was a community effort. Many community organizations advocated for improvement and beautification of their neighborhood park. The Norwegian-American community played a significant role. The efforts to improve the park spanned decades. Local residents continually fought for better conditions for their children. They addressed concerns regarding safety vandalism drug use and neglect. They raised money to create a monument to Leif Ericson. Eventually a rune stone was erected in the park.

Today Ericsson Playground stands as a testament to the community’s perseverance and commitment. The park has undergone several renovations and updates over the years. It continues to be a beloved recreational space for families and children in Greenpoint. The playground provides a space for children to play and for families to relax. The park has overcome significant challenges throughout its history. It remains a vital part of the Greenpoint neighborhood’s identity. The name Ericsson Playground serves as a reminder of its rich past and its ongoing contribution to the community.
