Established in 1912, the Erfurter Bahn has a rich history. Originally called the “Städtische Industriebahn” (Municipal Industrial Railway), it initially focused on freight transport within Erfurt. The Erfurter Bahn played a vital role in supporting local industries. It remained independent even during the DDR era, operating as a municipal entity. This allowed the Erfurter Bahn to maintain its unique identity and adapt to the changing economic landscape. After German reunification, the city of Erfurt sought to secure the railway’s future. On May 1, 1990, it established the Erfurter Industriebahn GmbH (EIB). All shares remained under the ownership of the city. A significant milestone was reached on September 20, 1995. The EIB became the first municipal enterprise in East Germany to be recognized as a “öffentliche nichtbundeseigene Eisenbahn” (public non-federal railway). Recognizing the need to diversify, the Erfurter Bahn ventured into passenger transport. This strategic move began in 1997, marking a new chapter in its history. The company’s name officially changed to “Erfurter Bahn GmbH” in 2007. This reflected its expanded role in passenger services. Today, the Erfurter Bahn operates a network of lines in Thuringia, and beyond. It serves regions in Bavaria, Saxony-Anhalt, and Saxony. Its fleet includes modern Stadler Regio-Shuttle RS1 and Bombardier Itino trains. The Erfurter Bahn also operates the Unterfranken Shuttle (lines 40 and 50), connecting various towns in the region. Another notable service is the Elster Saale Bahn. This network of lines was introduced to commemorate the Erfurter Bahn’s centenary.
