Was this small, windowless pavilion once a hermitage? You might be surprised to learn that the Eremitage, nestled on the banks of Potsdam’s Jungfernsee, was never intended for actual hermits. Erected in 1796 by King Friedrich Wilhelm II, the Eremitage served a far more intriguing purpose. While its exterior, clad in rustic oak bark, suggested a simple retreat, the interior held a secret world. Imagine stepping inside, the only light filtering through a skylight in the thatched roof. Your eyes would be drawn to the floor, a masterpiece of black and white marble. Embedded within it lay a magnificent world map, crafted with intricate marble inlays. This wasn’t just any map. It reflected the astrological studies of the Rosicrucians, a secret society that fascinated the king. The walls, too, held hidden knowledge. They were adorned with depictions of astronomical instruments, while the ceiling depicted the eight planets personified. Sadly, the Eremitage’s existence near the Berlin Wall led to its dismantling in 1964. However, like a phoenix rising, it was meticulously rebuilt on its original foundation in 2007. While the interior was initially left bare, the discovery of original floor panels in 2018 offers hope that one day, the Eremitage’s hidden world might be fully restored.
