Why is Epworth called the “bedroom community”? Many residents work in Harare’s city center, commuting daily. This high-density dormitory town, located about twelve kilometers from Harare, experienced explosive growth in the late 1970s and 1980s. Rural-to-urban migration led to the creation of informal settlements. Epworth, however, has a history predating this period. Founded as a Methodist Mission Station in 1890 by Rev. Shimmin, Epworth initially consisted of seven wards. The Methodist Church’s influence declined as they struggled to manage the rapid population influx. In 1983, they transferred ownership to the Ministry of Local Government. This move paved the way for government intervention in providing essential utilities like water, sewage, and electricity, which were previously lacking. Despite its unplanned growth, Epworth stands apart from other informal settlements. The Zimbabwean Government, acknowledging its long history and size, chose to upgrade rather than demolish it. Even the iconic Balancing Rocks, found on Zimbabwean banknotes, are located in its northern approaches.
