Gazing upon Epworth United Methodist Church, one can almost hear the echoes of 117 years of service. This vibrant church, nestled in the heart of the South Bronx, has been a beacon of faith and community since its inception in the early 1900s. Epworth United Methodist Church isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to the enduring power of faith, family, and community. The church’s mission resonates deeply with its commitment to reaching all people and enhancing their quality of life. Epworth United Methodist Church aims to minister to the spirit, soul, and body. This holistic approach reflects its dedication to serving the whole person. It recognizes that true well-being encompasses not just spiritual growth but also emotional and physical health. Originally, the congregation of Epworth United Methodist Church faced the challenge of a dilapidated, rented frame building for worship. However, their perseverance paid off. In 1922, they acquired land on Morris Avenue (now Concourse Village E) and 160th Street. A new church building rose, a symbol of their growing strength and dedication. This new structure housed a magnificent M.P. Möller organ, Opus 4403, installed in 1925. This two-manual organ, with its gold bronze decorations and enclosed pipes, filled the sanctuary with rich, inspiring sounds. It served as the heart of the church’s musical life, accompanying hymns and enriching worship services. Today, Epworth United Methodist Church continues to serve its community. It offers a range of programs. It has an afterschool/tutorial program designed to help students excel academically. The program provides classroom instruction in math and English language arts, homework help, and monitored online access for research. The church also runs the Hodges and Vines Outreach Ministry, further demonstrating its commitment to serving those in need. Epworth United Methodist Church invites everyone, whether in person or online, to join their community and experience the power of faith. It’s more than just a church; it’s a family, a place of hope, and a testament to the enduring spirit of the South Bronx.
