Why is the Epworth Mission Church considered a silent witness to Zimbabwe’s turbulent history? Right here, in this bustling town of Epworth, stands the Epworth Mission Church. Established in 1892 by Reverend Shimmin, this church has witnessed a century of dramatic change, mirroring the journey of Zimbabwe itself. The church’s story is deeply intertwined with the Methodist missionaries’ arrival in the late 19th century. They didn’t just bring their faith, but also a vision of a model community. This vision, however, faced challenges as Epworth’s population exploded during the late 1970s and 1980s, fueled by rural-urban migration. This unplanned influx strained the church’s resources, leading to the difficult decision in 1983 to transfer much of the mission farm to the government. Despite this, the Epworth Mission Church remained a beacon for the community. What many people don’t know is that the church’s influence extends beyond its walls. The famous Balancing Rocks, a striking geological formation found in Epworth and featured on Zimbabwean banknotes, are located within the original mission farm boundaries. Even today, the Epworth Mission Church stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of both faith and community, reminding us of the profound impact that seemingly small beginnings can have on shaping a nation’s identity.
