“A beacon of faith for 117 years,” a passerby might murmur, glancing at Epworth Methodist Church. Epworth Methodist Church stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith and community in the South Bronx. The church’s story begins in 1902. A small group gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George Peaco near 148th Street and Morris Avenue. Originally named St. Paul’s Methodist Episcopal Church, it was founded by Rev. F.A. Cullen, Mr. William Broks, and Rev. Frank Mason North. Rev. Albert Amos led the congregation as its first pastor from 1902 to 1903. In 1904, under the leadership of Rev. Julius S. Carroll, the church’s name changed to Epworth Episcopal Methodist Church. The church embarked on a physical journey as well as a spiritual one. They occupied a portable church building at 162nd Street and Grant Avenue. Finally, in 1926, Epworth Methodist Church found its home at 834 Morris Avenue, where it continues to serve the community. Over the decades, Epworth Methodist Church has seen numerous pastors guide its flock. From Rev. Charles H. Andrews, who served for 21 years, to the more recent leadership of Rev. Esau Abadio Greene, each pastor has contributed to the church’s rich tapestry of faith. The church’s mission remains steadfast: to become a God-fearing church, reaching all people and enhancing their quality of life. Epworth Methodist Church ministers to the spirit, soul, and body. It has served as a cornerstone of the community, offering support, guidance, and a place of belonging for generations. Today, Epworth Methodist Church continues to thrive. It is a multi-generational house of worship, deeply rooted in the heart of the South Bronx. It remains committed to its founding principles of faith, community, and family.
