“Can you believe it? Epworth Methodist Church has been around since 1894.” That’s what I overheard a local say, and it sparked my curiosity about this place. Epworth Methodist Church has a rich history within this community. It has evolved and adapted over the years.
Officially established on May 24, 1894, Epworth M.E. Church began with 163 charter members. It aimed to serve the growing population in the northwestern part of the city. This area is now known as the Old West End. The first building was dedicated on December 30, 1894. This frame building was located on Scottwood Avenue.
By September 1908, the congregation had grown significantly. Funds were raised to construct a new and larger building. The new site was at the southeastern corner of Parkwood Avenue and Delaware Avenue. Initially, it included only an auditorium. There were also Sunday School rooms, a kitchen, and a dining room. A major addition almost doubled the size on January 1, 1922. This included a sanctuary and other facilities, enriching the church’s capacity.
In 1939, the denomination changed its name. The church became Epworth Methodist Church. Tragedy struck on September 7, 1958. An arson fire severely damaged the church building. Remarkably, services continued without interruption. After two Sundays in alternative locations, services were held at DeVeaux School on Sylvania Avenue for three years. The old property was sold to Mary Manse College, which was adjacent. It was remodeled into the college’s library.
A new chapter began on October 15, 1961. The dedication service of the new building at Valleyview Drive and Central Avenue was held. The final mortgage was burned on May 28, 1978. The building was then consecrated. In 1968, another denominational change occurred. Epworth United Methodist Church emerged. This followed the merger with the Evangelical United Brethren Church.
Epworth celebrated its Centennial on May 24, 1994. A major addition was completed in 1994. This included the Family Life Center, new offices, and classrooms. The chancel area of the sanctuary was significantly remodeled in 2003. Other improvements were also made to the space.
Over its history, Epworth has been served by over twenty pastors. These leaders have guided the church through various eras. Epworth has also been blessed by numerous associate pastors. They have also had pastoral positions. Epworth United Methodist Church stands as a testament to faith. It is a beacon of community, and resilience. Its story is woven into the fabric of this city.
