Have you ever felt the damp earth beneath your feet? Welcome to the Eppendorfer Moor a unique place. Right here in the heart of Hamburg lies the largest inner-city moor in Europe. Imagine a tranquil oasis. It’s nestled between the bustling Alsterkrugchaussee and Hamburg Airport a surprising contrast. This remarkable 26-hectare haven is more than just a pretty place. It’s a living testament to history resilience and the enduring power of nature.

The Eppendorfer Moor wasn’t always a protected area. In fact its story is one of transformation. Once a much larger expanse of wetland this area was used for peat extraction. A military shooting range also occupied part of the moor until 1904. The street name Kugelfang still reminds us of this chapter. Imagine the sounds of gunfire echoing across this now-peaceful landscape.

The Eppendorfer Moor faced significant challenges. Urban development drained and altered the moor. Extensive deforestation during the post-war period further impacted its delicate ecosystem. However the loss of trees inadvertently allowed many moorland plants to return. Yet later afforestation attempts along with the construction of the Alsterkrugchaussee lowered the groundwater level. This caused the loss of many moisture-loving plants.

Today the Eppendorfer Moor is a flourishing habitat. It’s home to over 320 plant species including 35 types of moss and 20 different trees. Endangered species such as the Sumpf-Blutauge (Marsh Bluet) the Strauu00dfblu00fctige Gilbweiderich (Stiff Yellow Loosestrife) and Gagelstrauch (Sweet Gale) thrive here. A central water body surrounded by a birch and alder swamp is the moor’s heart. Birds such as the wren robin and blackbird inhabit the area. Since 1998 the woodchat shrike nuthatch marsh tit and buzzard are permanent residents.

But threats remain. Pollution noise and recreational use continue to challenge the moor’s delicate balance. Long dry periods also endanger this ecosystem which relies heavily on groundwater and rainwater. The NABU (Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union) along with the city of Hamburg works to preserve this precious resource. The ongoing battle to protect the Eppendorfer Moor is an important reminder of the constant need for conservation efforts. Even in the midst of a thriving city nature deserves its space. This is a valuable reminder of the importance of urban green spaces and the fragility of our ecosystem. So take a moment. Breathe in the fresh air. Appreciate the quiet beauty of the Eppendorfer Moor.
