A million-dollar makeover. That’s what awaited Epiphany Playground. Located between South 9th and South 10th Streets along Berry Street in South Williamsburg this beloved neighborhood spot was in for a transformation. Epiphany Playground wasn’t just a playground. It was a vital part of the community.
The Prospect Park Alliance stepped in. They offered pro-bono design services. This was part of Mayor de Blasio’s Community Parks Initiative. The city provided funding. The Alliance gave in-kind support. The renovation would be based on community input. Nearly 100 residents shared their vision. This included many children.
Improved lighting was a priority. Abundant greenery was desired. More open space for kids to run and play was essential. The design process started. Construction was slated for 2018. The final design included new play equipment. It catered to children of all ages. A gentle water feature would be added. A multipurpose free-play area was planned. Sport courts including a junior-sized basketball court and a handball court were included.
To open up the space high shrubs were removed. Small trees and lower shrubs replaced them. A new entrance opened at Berry and South Tenth Streets. Benches and café-style tables were added. Two bottle-filler drinking fountains improved accessibility. New trash receptacles kept the playground clean. Street trees offered shade. Security lighting improved safety at night. Green infrastructure helped manage stormwater runoff.
