Contemplate how a former emperor chose this very spot. This is Entsu Temple. It is a Zen Buddhist monastery with a remarkable past. Entsu Temple started as Hataeda Palace. Emperor Go-Mizunoo built it as his villa in the 17th century.

Go-Mizunoo sought the perfect place for Zen Buddhism practice. For over ten years, he searched. In 1678, the villa transformed into Entsu Temple. Enkoinbunei, once an attendant to the Emperor’s mother, initiated the change. Keisen Soryu became Entsu Temple’s first head priest. He was the tenth head priest of the Myoshinji School of Rinzai Zen Buddhism.

Entsu Temple stands north of Kyoto. Getting here requires a bit of effort. But the reward is a serene escape from tourist crowds. The temple offers a spiritual pause. Absolute quietness is often found here. You might only hear the recorded explanations from monks.

The highlight of Entsu Temple is its stunning dry garden. This garden showcases “borrowed scenery” or shakkei. Mount Hiei-zan appears as part of the garden. Forty rocks lie amidst moss beds. Maple trees line each side. Tall cedar trees and camellias add to the view. More than fifty varieties of camellias are planted here.

Emperor Go-Mizunoo designed the original gardens himself. Or perhaps Kobori Enshu did. The garden was restored after World War II. It had fallen into disrepair. Kyoto City protects this wonderful view. The garden is a designated National Place of Scenic Beauty.

Autumn brings a special beauty to Entsu Temple. Maple leaves turn red creating a vibrant display. The indoors are fitted with heating mats. Visitors can enjoy the view comfortably.

Entsu Temple also has a statue of Kannon. Kannon is the deity of peace and mercy. A hanging scroll made by Emperor Reigen is here too. It is a designated national cultural treasure.

Remember that photos are allowed only on the garden side. Taking photos inside the main hall Hondo is forbidden. This restriction preserves Entsu Temple’s beauty. It keeps it unspoiled by mass tourism. Consider extending your visit with a walk to Lake Takaragaike’s Park. It is surrounded by Mounts Matsugasaki.

Entsu Temple offers a unique experience. It blends imperial heritage with Zen Buddhist tradition. The borrowed scenery is truly remarkable. As you leave, carry the tranquility with you. Remember the vision of Emperor Go-Mizunoo. Appreciate the enduring beauty of Entsu Temple.
