Have you ever wondered what secrets a quiet pond holds? Here at the Ententeich, nestled in Hamburg’s Stadtpark, a charming story unfolds. The Ententeich, meaning “duck pond,” was created in the early 1920s. It transformed a former swampy area into a tranquil oasis. The pond is located in the northern part of Stadtpark. It is positioned between the jumping garden and the nature theater.
The Ententeich is more than just a pretty picture. It’s a vibrant ecosystem. Reeds surround the water, providing shelter for the ducks that give the pond its name. These ducks navigate gracefully through the water lilies, adding a touch of life to the scene. Alders and willows line the shores and islets, their branches reaching towards the water. During the summer, irises and water thrush add splashes of color to the banks. In autumn, the reddish-brown bald cypresses transform the landscape with their warm hues.
A bridge crosses the Ententeich at its narrowest point, connecting two worlds. On the northern “Bastion,” a small observation station houses a permanently installed blue telescope. This offers visitors a free and unique perspective to observe the diverse wildlife around the water. On the south side, a large wooden heart marks the “kissing corner,” a romantic spot for couples. Both the telescope and the heart are remnants of a 2003 project. This project aimed to create a nature adventure area for children and young people.
The Ententeich holds a hidden gem. Northwest of the bridge lies a large, secluded open area. This space was once the jumping garden, a riding arena that even hosted tournaments. After it was abandoned, part of the area was transformed into a sunbathing lawn. The “duck pond biotope” was created in the rear area. Today, this lawn serves as a gathering place for people of all ages to relax and enjoy the sunshine.
