A splash of art nouveau whispers from the buildings around us. Welcome to Ensemble Mexikoplatz. This is more than just a square. It is a testament to Berlin’s ever-evolving story.

In the early 20th century, this area was envisioned as an elegant suburban colony. The Mexikoplatz was born from grand ambitions. The square’s symmetrical design reflects a desire for order. Zehlendorf’s garden director, Emil Schubert, created this layout between 1905 and 1907.

Look around. Notice how Argentinische Allee bisects the square. Identical buildings stand on either side, mirroring each other. These buildings were designed by Otto Kuhlmann. They create a unified architectural style.

Originally, the station was named Zehlendorf-Beerenstraße in 1904. It was renamed Zehlendorf-West in 1911. Then it was renamed Lindenthaler Allee in 1958. Finally, it became Mexikoplatz in 1987. This name honors the surrounding streets. Many are named after Latin American countries.

Pause for a moment. Imagine the hustle and bustle of the early 1900s. The KPEV emblem on the railway bridge. It stands for the Royal Prussian Railway Administration. It reminds us of the square’s connection to Prussia’s railway history.

During Berlin’s 750th anniversary in 1987, Mexikoplatz underwent significant restoration. The goal was to revive its former glory. Architects worked to reconstruct historical details.

The Mexikoplatz station itself is a landmark. It is one of the few genuine Art Nouveau buildings in Berlin. It is heritage listed. The station even faced closure due to a strike in 1980. It was later reopened in 1985.

Despite some setbacks, Mexikoplatz has retained its charm. The planned U-Bahn extension could further enhance its importance.

Today, Mexikoplatz is a vibrant hub. It hosts a variety of activities. There are shops. There are farmers markets.

Consider the blue mailbox near the station. It is a unique detail that harkens back to when all Berlin mailboxes were blue.

Notice the Litfaßsäulen or advertising columns. These pillars once served as essential information hubs.

The Ensemble Mexikoplatz is a blend of architectural beauty. It is a mix of urban culture. It connects old and new influences. Take a moment to appreciate this special place. It is more than just a square. It is a living piece of Berlin’s history.
