Beneath the somber gaze of Madrid’s history lies the Enrique Aguilar Prieto Plaque. It’s a stark reminder of a life tragically cut short. This plaque, placed here in 2018, commemorates Lieutenant Enrique Aguilar Prieto, a man dedicated to his country. He served in the Spanish Air Force. His life was taken by the terrorist group ETA in 1991. The Enrique Aguilar Prieto Plaque stands as a testament to the enduring pain of loss. It also speaks volumes about the resilience of the human spirit. The inscription on the Enrique Aguilar Prieto Plaque reads: “Here, Enrique Aguilar Prieto was assassinated by the terrorist group ETA on June 5, 1991. Truth, memory, and justice.” Enrique, a 52-year-old native of Palencia, was a husband and a father of two. On that fateful morning, he was simply going to work. He was heading to the Cartographic Service of the Transmissions School at the Cuatro Vientos Air Base. A bomb, planted in his car, detonated, ending his life. The explosion also injured four students nearby. His remains were cremated at La Almudena Cemetery here in Madrid. He was posthumously awarded the Cross of Aeronautical Merit with white distinction. The Enrique Aguilar Prieto Plaque serves not only as a memorial but as a call for remembrance. It reminds us to never forget the victims of terrorism and their families. It underscores the importance of truth, memory, and justice in healing and moving forward.
