Ever wondered how cities defended themselves centuries ago? Let’s step back in time, right here at the Enderttor. The Enderttor is Cochem’s most imposing city gate. It stands as a testament to a time of city walls and defensive strategies.

Built in 1352 by Elector Balduin, the Enderttor served as the northern gateway. It was a crucial part of Cochem’s city wall. The Enderttor protected the city from potential attacks. These attacks would come from the Endert Valley. Imagine hostile forces gathering in the distance. The Enderttor was the city’s shield.

Interestingly, the Enderttor was more than just a defense structure. It was also a familiar sight to travelers. Stagecoach passengers traveling to Cologne and Frankfurt gathered here. They would meet near the adjacent Torschenke before their departure. The Enderttor was thus a bustling hub. It connected Cochem to distant cities.

For a time, the Enderttor served another, grimmer purpose. It was used as Cochem’s city prison. Picture the heavy door creaking shut. This marked the confinement of those who had fallen foul of the law. Today, thankfully, its role is purely historical.

A fascinating legend surrounds the Enderttor. It tells the tale of Ritter Franz von Sickingen’s soldiers. They attempted to storm Cochem. The citizens kept their city gates firmly closed. The attackers camped on the meadows of the Endert Valley.

The citizens devised a clever plan to prevent the city’s capture and looting. They gathered all the empty wine barrels in the courtyard of the Enderttor. When the attackers broke through the gate, a flood of heavy wine barrels rolled towards them. Many soldiers were injured. When the invaders realized the barrels were empty, they retreated. They assumed a city with empty wine barrels held no worthwhile loot. So Cochem was saved not by force, but by cunning.

The Enderttor remains fully preserved. The gatekeeper’s house also still exists. Today, the Enderttor is located in the city’s lively pedestrian zone. This is a stark contrast to its original defensive purpose. Now it welcomes visitors rather than repelling invaders.

Standing here, you can almost hear the echoes of the past. The Enderttor has seen armies, travelers, and prisoners. It has witnessed sieges and celebrations. It stands as a proud symbol of Cochem’s resilience and ingenuity. The Enderttor is a journey through time. It connects us to the stories and legends of old Cochem. Take a moment to appreciate this remarkable gate. It’s more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a piece of living history.
