Picture the Emscherquellhof a charming half-timbered farmstead. It nestles in Holzwickede a town east of Dortmund. This isn’t just any farmstead. This is where the Emscher River begins its journey.

The Emscherquellhof has a rich history. Built in 1801 it was originally known as the Lünschermannshof. Westphalian farming families Lünschermann and Schroer built it. The main building a renovated stable and a freestanding former bakery still stand. At the heart of the complex lies a small pond. This unassuming pond marks the source of the Emscher River. The water flows underground from the main building into the pond.

Interestingly the Emscher’s true source isn’t directly at the Emscherquellhof. It springs from five different points several hundred meters southwest. However surveyors working for the Prussian King incorrectly marked the Lünschermannshof as the source in 1824. This error gave the farmstead its current name and lasting fame.

For over two centuries the Emscherquellhof underwent many changes. Parts of the original farm layout disappeared. Only the bakery stable and main house survived. In 2004 the Emschergenossenschaft acquired the Emscherquellhof. Millions of euros were invested in its meticulous restoration. The buildings were carefully restored to their original state. Outdated interior additions were removed. Original facades windows and the roof structure were reconstructed.

Today the Emscherquellhof is a vibrant center. It serves as a training facility meeting and education center. It also hosts exhibitions on the Emscher River’s water management and industrial history. The Emscherquellhof is a key location on the Route of Industrial Culture. It is featured on three themes Mythos Ruhrgebiet On the Way to the Blue Emscher and Salt Steam and Coal. It’s a place where history and the future of the region converge.
