In 1916, a grand new building arose on Magna’s Main Street, just west of Salt Lake City. The Empress Theatre, with its neo-classical architecture, was a beacon for the booming copper-mining community. The Empress Theatre’s ornate Beaux-Arts trim and colorful brickwork made a bold statement. Above the entrance, the name “Empress” proudly stood in classic signage. The Empress Theatre wasn’t just a building. It was a symbol of Magna’s prosperity and a testament to the community’s love for entertainment. Originally built as a burlesque show for the miners at Kennecott, the Empress Theatre quickly adapted. By 1917, it was showing silent movies, captivating audiences with the magic of the silver screen. The Empress Theatre remained a movie house through at least 1930, providing a vital source of entertainment for the community. The Empress Theatre faced challenges over the years. It saw periods of disuse and even faced the threat of demolition. Yet, the community rallied around their beloved theatre. In 1985, it was designated a National Historic Place. A dedicated group of volunteers took on the responsibility of operating the theatre, ensuring that its legacy would live on. In 2006, the Oquirrh Hills Performing Arts Alliance stepped in. They leased the building and continued the renovation work. The Empress Theatre reopened its doors on November 4, 2006, with a production of “Forever Plaid.” The Empress Theatre continues to thrive. Over 116 productions have graced its stage since 2006, thanks to the dedicated volunteer staff. The Empress Theatre is more than just a theatre. It’s a testament to the power of community, a symbol of resilience, and a vibrant hub of art and entertainment in the heart of Magna.
