A humble mission church on Ottawa Street. That’s where the story of Emmanuel United Church began in 1920. It was then known as the Ottawa Street Methodist Church a small but dedicated congregation. This wasn’t just any Methodist church however.
Fast forward to 1925. A new church was built. It stood on Lincoln Road in Walkerville. This new building marked a significant turning point. It wasn’t just a new building. It became the very first United Church in Canada. This happened concurrently with the formation of the United Church of Canada itself. This significant event united Methodist Presbyterian and Congregational churches. The new church was initially named Ottawa United Church a fitting tribute to its location and historical moment. The architects John E Trace and Geo F Diehl designed a modern take on the English Romanesque style. The auditorium was designed without columns the roof supported by steel trusses.
The congregation grew. By the 1950s a larger sanctuary was needed. In 1956 a warm and inspiring sanctuary was built. A small intimate chapel was added for private prayer and worship. This expansion prompted a name change. The church officially became Emmanuel United Church. The name change reflected the church’s evolving identity and growing spiritual strength.
The growth continued. In 1997 Emmanuel United Church welcomed the congregation of Grace United Church. The amalgamation enriched both congregations. A stained-glass window The Good Shepherd from Grace United Church found a home in Emmanuel’s sanctuary. The church celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2021 though it was slightly delayed by the Covid-19 pandemic.
In 2024 another significant merger took place. Central United Church joined Emmanuel for worship and pastoral care. This act further solidified Emmanuel’s role as a beacon of faith and community. The two congregations voted unanimously to formally amalgamate.
From its humble beginnings as a small mission church Emmanuel United Church has grown and adapted. It’s a vibrant congregation active in the community. Emmanuel United Church continues to serve its community. It offers celebrative worship outreach programs and pastoral care. It’s a place of faith fellowship and community in the heart of Detroit. It’s a testament to the enduring power of faith and community.
