Was Emmanuel College always a haven for scholars? No. Before the hushed whispers of academics, this very ground echoed with the chants of Dominican monks. Emmanuel College, right here on St. Andrew’s Street, was founded in 1584 by Sir Walter Mildmay, a Puritan and Queen Elizabeth I’s Chancellor of the Exchequer. Mildmay chose this spot, the former site of a Dominican priory dissolved some 45 years earlier. Imagine the transformation. The priory’s chapel became the college’s dining hall. And the monks’ former dining hall? It became Emmanuel College’s first chapel. Mildmay’s vision was clear: to create a training ground for Anglican preachers. The queen, upon hearing of the new college, reportedly quipped, “Sir Walter, I hear you have erected a Puritan foundation.” Mildmay’s clever reply? “No, madam, far be it from me to countenance anything contrary to your established laws; but I have set an acorn, which when it becomes an oak, God alone knows what will be the fruit thereof.” And what fruit it bore! Emmanuel College’s influence spread far and wide, particularly across the Atlantic. One-third of the first 100 university graduates in New England were Emmanuel men. One of them, John Harvard, lent his name and inspiration to the first college in the United States, modeled after his alma mater, Emmanuel College. Even today, the two institutions maintain close ties, with exchange scholarships and the Gomes lecture and dinner held annually at Emmanuel in honor of a former Harvard minister. Look around. The very stones whisper stories of transformation and legacy. The current chapel, a masterpiece by Christopher Wren, replaced the original, unconsecrated chapel in the late 17th century. That original chapel then became the library. And then, centuries later, it was transformed yet again into a second dining hall. The grounds, too, hold traces of the past. The large fishpond? A relic of the Dominican friary, now home to a lively colony of ducks. And tucked away in the Fellows’ Garden is the friars’ bathing pool. It’s arguably the oldest outdoor pool in continuous use in the UK. From monastic chants to scholarly debates, Emmanuel College has seen it all. Its history is a testament to the enduring power of transformation, a place where the echoes of the past mingle with the promise of the future.
