Bishop Wilson was born in Jacksonville, Texas. He married Mary Forrest in 1906. Initially, he opposed the “holiness” church. He later embraced it. In 1912, he joined the Church Of God In Christ ministry.
Before founding Emmanuel Church of God in Christ, Bishop Wilson built churches in Texas. He even started Hillsborough Holiness School. He financed much of this work himself. Bishop Wilson moved to California in 1924. He became the second Overseer of the Church Of God In Christ in California.
In 1925, a small group gathered at 29th and Compton Avenue. They wanted to conduct a revival. They erected a tent for worship. In 1926, Sis. Emma Galbraith donated money. This allowed the purchase of land at 33rd and Compton. Bishop Wilson built a church there. He named it Emmanuel Church Of God In Christ. It means “The Lord is with us.”
Emmanuel Church of God in Christ has touched many lives. It symbolizes revival and restoration. Today, Bishop Uleses Henderson, Jr. leads the church. The church seeks to transform lives with a Kingdom-minded perspective. Emmanuel Church of God in Christ continues to be a beacon of hope.
In August 2016, the life of Bishop Samuel Martin Crouch, Sr. was celebrated here. He had passed away 40 years prior. Bishop Crouch was an important figure. He served as Overseer in California and held other high positions.
