In 1916, her vision became reality. The Opportunity School opened its doors. It was located in the old Longfellow School. The school was “For All Who Wish to Learn”. That was written above the entrance. The school welcomed students of all ages and backgrounds.
The response was overwhelming. Emily Griffith expected 200 students. Instead, 1,400 enrolled in the first week. The Emily Griffith Opportunity School became a beacon of hope. It offered a path to a better future.
The school expanded over the years. New buildings were added. The 1926 Main Education Building became a landmark. It symbolized Griffith’s commitment to education. The Longfellow School was eventually demolished. This made way for further expansion.
