A U.S. Legation opened in Jeddah on May 1, 1942. James S. Moose Jr. served as Chargé d’Affaires ad interim. This marked a crucial step forward. On March 18, 1949, the Legation became an Embassy. J. Rives Childs became the first Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary.
