Mozambique’s story unfolds right here at the Embassy of the Republic of Mozambique. This embassy stands as a symbol of the enduring friendship between Mozambique and Germany. It is located on Stromstraße in Berlin’s Moabit district.
The Embassy of the Republic of Mozambique has a rich history. Mozambique gained independence in 1975. The German Democratic Republic, or GDR, established diplomatic ties that same year. Many Mozambicans studied and worked in the GDR. This fostered close relations between the two countries.
After Mozambique’s civil war ended in 1992, Germany assisted in the country’s reconstruction. Numerous high-level visits demonstrate the strong bilateral relations. A delegation of Mozambican members of parliament once visited the German Bundestag. They also visited the German Bundesrat. They discussed matters with the Federal Foreign Office. They spoke with the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development too.
Germany provides Mozambique with significant development cooperation. This amounts to approximately EUR 60 million each year. Economic ties are also strong. Mozambique’s natural resources, including natural gas, contribute to this.
The Embassy of the Republic of Mozambique building is quite interesting. It is a seven-story office and commercial building. Architect Manfred Pechtold designed it. It was constructed between 1992 and 1994. The embassy’s offices are located on the first floor. You might notice a public restaurant on the ground floor. A bronze figure stands in the green courtyard.
The Embassy of the Republic of Mozambique not only represents Mozambique’s interests in Germany. It also represents Mozambique in Austria. It serves as a diplomatic link to Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Vatican City. Mozambique also has honorary consulates in Hamburg and Munich.
Several ambassadors have served at the Embassy of the Republic of Mozambique. Elias Jaime Zimba assumed the role on May 30, 2024.
From its early days with the GDR to its present-day role, the Embassy of the Republic of Mozambique remains a vital bridge. It strengthens the bonds between Mozambique and Germany. It promotes cooperation and understanding. It stands as a testament to enduring diplomatic ties. Take a moment to appreciate the work done within these walls. It shapes international relations.
