What secrets do diplomatic walls hold? The Embassy of the Philippines in Riyadh, an unassuming building from the outside, is a treasure trove of stories. Let’s uncover them together. The Embassy of the Philippines in Riyadh wasn’t always located in Riyadh. It began its journey in Jeddah in 1973. Its first ambassador, Lininding Pangandaman, set up shop in the former Saudi capital. Eventually, a royal decree in 1983 called for all diplomatic missions to relocate to Riyadh. The Philippines secured land in 1985, and the embassy temporarily operated in the King Fahd Quarter while a new chancery was built in the Diplomatic Quarter. The embassy building itself has a story to tell. President Fidel Ramos laid the cornerstone for the new structure in 1994. The inauguration followed in 1996 under Ambassador Romulo Espaldon. More recently, the ambassador’s residence, a 28-year-old structure designed by Filipino national artist Francisco Mañosa, underwent significant restorations, completed in June 2024. The Embassy of the Philippines also has a fascinating annex. A multi-purpose hall, funded through the 2020 General Appropriations Act, was completed in February 2022 and inaugurated in June of the same year. This hall significantly expands the services offered to Filipinos in the Kingdom. Beyond Riyadh, the embassy’s reach extends to Yemen. It oversees Philippine interests there and maintains an Honorary Consulate in Sana’a. The Embassy of the Philippines in Riyadh serves as more than just a diplomatic post. It’s a hub of activity for the Filipino community. It provides essential consular services, including passport renewals and visa issuance. It also plays a vital role in protecting the rights and well-being of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), offering labor assistance programs and cultural events. The Embassy of the Philippines in Riyadh is a place where history, diplomacy, and community intersect. It stands as a testament to the enduring ties between the Philippines and Saudi Arabia, and a symbol of support for Filipinos abroad.
