The Embassy of the Philippines in Riyadh wasn’t always located in Riyadh. It began its journey in Jeddah in 1973. Its first ambassador, Lininding Pangandaman, set up shop in the former Saudi capital. Eventually, a royal decree in 1983 called for all diplomatic missions to relocate to Riyadh. The Philippines secured land in 1985, and the embassy temporarily operated in the King Fahd Quarter while a new chancery was built in the Diplomatic Quarter. The embassy building itself has a story to tell. President Fidel Ramos laid the cornerstone for the new structure in 1994. The inauguration followed in 1996 under Ambassador Romulo Espaldon. More recently, the ambassador’s residence, a 28-year-old structure designed by Filipino national artist Francisco Mañosa, underwent significant restorations, completed in June 2024. A multi-purpose hall, funded through the 2020 General Appropriations Act, was completed in February 2022 and inaugurated in June of the same year.
