“Can you imagine being the only embassy in Ankara?” That was the reality for the Embassy of Russia in Ankara in 1920. Today, we stand before this embassy, a place of history and diplomacy.

The Embassy of Russia in Ankara represents the Russian Federation in Turkey. It is the official channel between the two countries. Alexei Yerkhov is the current ambassador. He has held this position since June 19, 2017. The embassy is located on Andrea Karlova Street in the Çankaya district.

Diplomatic ties between Russia and Turkey go way back. They started in the 15th century. Ivan III of Russia sent an embassy to Constantinople in the 1490s. Representatives were exchanged over the years. However, relations were often rocky. Conflicts led to suspensions. A major break occurred in 1914. The Ottoman Empire joined World War I against Russia.

After the Russian Revolution, things changed. The Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic and the Ottoman Empire sought common ground. Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and Georgy Chicherin exchanged letters. This led to the establishment of formal relations on June 3, 1920. Despite changes in leadership and the rise and fall of empires, diplomatic contact continued.

In 1991, the Soviet Union dissolved. Turkey recognized the Russian Federation. Albert Chernyshov, the Soviet ambassador, stayed on as the Russian ambassador. Relations had their ups and downs. Tensions rose during the Syrian Civil War. In 2015, Turkey shot down a Russian jet.

Tragedy struck in 2016. Andrei Karlov, the Russian ambassador to Turkey, was assassinated. This was a shocking event. It underscored the dangers faced by diplomats. Despite this, relations were later normalized.

The Embassy of Russia in Ankara has witnessed many key events. In 1920, Kemal Atatürk sought assistance from Soviet Russia. He wanted military aid and diplomatic recognition. Georgy Chicherin responded positively. This led to the establishment of diplomatic relations. The Soviet embassy became the only foreign mission in Ankara at that time.

Today, the Embassy of Russia in Ankara continues its work. It promotes cooperation between Russia and Turkey. It also provides consular services. You can find Russia consulates general in Istanbul, Trabzon and Antalya. There is also an honorary consul in İzmir. The embassy’s website provides information on its activities. It also offers assistance with visa applications.

The building stands as a symbol of enduring ties. It has weathered wars, revolutions, and political shifts. The Embassy of Russia in Ankara remains a vital link between two nations with a long and complex history. Take a moment to reflect on the history within these walls. Consider the diplomats who have worked to build bridges between Russia and Turkey. Their efforts continue to shape the relationship between these two important countries.
