Amidst the tranquil streets of Aravaca, the Embassy of North Korea stands as a silent sentinel. This unassuming building, located at 43 Calle Darío Aparicio, once buzzed with diplomatic activity. It served as the official representation of North Korea to Spain. The Embassy of North Korea opened its doors on October 1, 2013, marking a significant moment in the diplomatic relations between the two nations. Kim Hyok-chol became the first North Korean ambassador to Spain. His tenure, however, was short-lived. In September 2017, following North Korea’s nuclear tests, he was expelled from Spain as persona non grata. The Embassy of North Korea continued to operate under Chargé d’affaires Yun Suk So. A dramatic incident unfolded at the Embassy of North Korea on February 22, 2019. The Free Joseon political group, opponents of the Kim Jong Un regime, allegedly broke into the embassy. They reportedly stole several digital devices. This incident further strained the already tense international relations surrounding North Korea. Despite the controversy, the Embassy of North Korea remained operational for a few more years. Unfortunately, the weight of international sanctions and the DPRK’s isolation eventually led to its closure. On November 1, 2023, the Embassy of North Korea in Madrid officially ceased its operations. The building now stands as a stark reminder of the complexities and challenges in international diplomacy.
