The Embassy of Brunei in Ankara officially opened on January 8, 2014. This event marked a significant step in strengthening relations between the two nations. Turkey had already established its embassy in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei, a few months earlier.
But the story of Brunei-Turkey relations stretches back further. Even before Brunei’s independence, Turkey showed its support. When the Brunei Rebellion broke out in 1962, Turkey offered assistance.
Turkey also backed Brunei’s decision not to join Malaysia in 1963. Turkish diplomats consulted with Brunei’s delegation in Kuala Lumpur. They supported Brunei’s constitutional reforms, including the restoration of the Legislative Council.
After Brunei declared independence in 1984, security became a primary concern. Turkey used its relationships with Malaysia and Indonesia to support Brunei’s admission into ASEAN. From 1987 to 1988, Turkish diplomats aided Brunei’s relations with its neighbors. These efforts led to improved relations with Malaysia and Indonesia.
Many high-level visits have further cemented ties. His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei visited Turkey in April 2012. It was the first head-of-state visit between the countries. H.E. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, then Prime Minister, visited Brunei in November 2012.
The Sultan of Brunei attended the 13th Islamic Summit Conference of OIC in Istanbul in 2016. Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs H.E. Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu visited Brunei in November 2018. The Sultan again visited Turkey in March 2023.
The Embassy of Brunei in Ankara plays a vital role in these ongoing relationships. It facilitates diplomatic exchanges and supports Bruneian citizens in Turkey. As of November 2022, 12 Bruneian citizens resided in Turkey.
The embassy also promotes educational opportunities. Through the Türkiye Scholarships, Bruneian students can study at Turkish universities. Many others pursue higher education in Turkey at their own expense.
In times of need, the bond between Brunei and Turkey shines. In 2024, after the devastating earthquake in Turkey, Brunei donated $500,000 to AFAD for recovery efforts.
