Embarcadero Marina Park South covers thirteen acres. It is bisected by Marina Parkway. The park culminates in a large, curved parking area. The parking leads to a T-shaped fishing pier. Cement sidewalks run along the perimeter of the park’s two lawns. North of the parking lot is a three-acre oval lawn. To the south is a cement basketball court. An elevated gazebo adjoins it.
The Embarcadero in San Diego is the area along the San Diego harbor. It’s on the east side of San Diego Bay. Embarcadero is a Spanish word. It means boarding place. The Embarcadero sits on property administered by the Port of San Diego. It’s in the Columbia district of downtown San Diego.
In 1976, Bernice Leyton commissioned the park. She was San Diego’s first woman port commissioner. The parks were formed from dredging the bay’s shipping channels. Wimmer Yamada & Associates designed them. The park was completed in 1978.
The parks are connected via the South Embarcadero promenade. The two parks extend into the bay. They shelter the Embarcadero Marina. Both are lined by riprap. They consist mainly of open lawns. Gently rolling mounds are no more than three feet high. The undulating turf is interspersed with groves of eucalyptus and coral trees. These trees diminish the impact of western winds at Embarcadero Marina Park South.
