Why did Ella Mae Power become synonymous with softball in Novi? Ella Mae Power Park, nestled in Novi, Michigan, isn’t just a collection of ball diamonds. It’s a testament to a woman’s generosity and a community’s vision. Ella Mae Power deeded land to Novi Township, intending it for the community’s benefit. Unfortunately, the state sold the land for unpaid taxes before the transfer could be completed. However, Novi officials, recognizing Power’s intent, successfully petitioned the state to return the proceeds from the sale. This money, earmarked for parkland, was used to purchase part of the land the Novi School District owned. This land eventually became home to the Civic Center, the police station, and Ella Mae Power Park. Today, Ella Mae Power Park stands as a premier athletic complex, renowned for its six softball diamonds. It hosts local leagues, as well as national, state, and recreational tournaments. Beyond the diamonds, Ella Mae Power Park boasts nearly 30 acres of mature hardwood forest, a haven for hikers. Two play structures, one inclusive and wheelchair accessible, offer fun for children of all abilities. A small shelter provides respite from sun or rain. The park even saw the addition of dugout covers in 2016, protecting players from the elements. Ella Mae Power Park embodies community spirit. It’s a place where Power’s original vision of community space thrives. It offers a place for sports, recreation, and a connection with nature.
