Elisabeth-von-Thadden-Schule is more than classrooms and books. It embodies the spirit of its founder. Elisabeth von Thadden established it in 1927. She envisioned a place of open minds and strong values.
Initially, the Elisabeth-von-Thadden-Schule began as a girls’ boarding school. Elisabeth sought to create an educational environment inspired by Christian principles. Her vision took shape in the Wieblingen Castle. She leased the castle and founded the association Evangelisches Landerziehungsheim Wieblingen e. V.
The Elisabeth-von-Thadden-Schule quickly gained recognition. It stood out due to Elisabeth von Thadden’s resistance against the Nazi regime. Even with her religious beliefs, she welcomed Jewish girls. Elisabeth often faced scrutiny from the National Socialists. She refused to display pictures of Adolf Hitler in classrooms. She did not force students to give the Hitler salute.
When all schools were nationalized in 1941, Elisabeth helped many Jewish people emigrate. She even moved classes to Tutzing during the war. Sadly, Elisabeth was later arrested. She was condemned for being part of a resistance circle. She was executed in 1944.
After World War II, the Elisabeth-von-Thadden-Schule reopened. It became a symbol of resilience. Many Jewish teachers returned. Today, the school is a private gymnasium. It remains part of the Schulstiftung der Evangelischen Landeskirche in Baden. About 900 students attend and around 80 teachers educate here.
The Elisabeth-von-Thadden-Schule embraces diversity. It is open to all religions and worldviews. It has language profiles with Latin, English, French and Spanish. There is also a science profile. The school offers exchange programs to many countries.
The Elisabeth-von-Thadden-Schule integrates modern approaches. It is a MINT-friendly school. This means it focuses on mathematics, IT, science and technology. In 2014, a project started to show more courage against racism.
The school has a large park. It includes the former Wieblingen Castle and a chapel. Buildings are named after important people from the school’s history.
Notably, the Elisabeth-von-Thadden-Schule was nominated for the German School Prize in 2019. It received 5,000 euros. Queen Silvia of Sweden also attended Elisabeth-von-Thadden-Schule.
