Stepping onto Buchholzer Strasse 3 you stand before the Elisabeth-Christinen-Grundschule. This isn’t just any school. It’s a place with a rich history.

The Elisabeth-Christinen-Grundschule bears the name of Elisabeth Christine wife of Frederick II. She spent considerable time at Schloss Schönhausen. The school’s original location was quite different. Until the end of World War II it resided at Dietzgenstrasse 69 formerly Kaiser-Wilhelm-Strasse.

During the GDR era it transformed. It became the Otto Grotewohl Polytechnical Secondary School. This name change occurred in 1968 honoring the former East German Prime Minister. The school’s building then was located on Lindenberger Strasse and partly on Rolandstrasse. This building was not up to modern fire safety standards. They even had to use security guards as fire alarms for a time.

In February 2019 the Elisabeth-Christinen-Grundschule moved. Its new home is the former Hans-Fallada-School. The old building remains empty awaiting renovation. The school’s current building offers spacious classrooms. They are arranged by grade level. There are also specialist rooms.

The school boasts a sizable playground. It is divided into two sections. One section includes a small hill for play. The other has a school garden. The front courtyard features a paved sports area and play equipment. The gymnasium however is not on school grounds. It is located about 50 meters away at Konrad-Duden-Oberschule.

The Elisabeth-Christinen-Grundschule is a half-day school. Both entry classes are large. The school focuses on gifted education. It participates in the “Leistung macht Schule” program. This is a federal initiative for promoting academic excellence. They also use the Austrian developed “mBET” tool. This stands for multidimensional talent development tool. It aids in identifying and fostering students’ unique abilities. The school fosters collaborations. These include partnerships with Schloss Schönhausen and the Fröhlich Music School.

The Elisabeth-Christinen-Grundschule is more than just a school. It’s a living testament to Berlin’s history. It’s a place where learning thrives. It’s a vibrant community hub enriching young minds. It’s a testament to resilience adaptation and dedication to education.
