Ever walked among ancient oaks? Elfin Forest Recreational Reserve awaits you. This isn’t just any forest. It’s a 784-acre haven in the heart of North San Diego County near Escondido. Opened in 1992 Elfin Forest wasn’t always a recreational paradise.

Initially it was part of a larger water project. The Olivenhain Municipal Water District the San Diego County Water Authority and the US Department of the Interior collaborated. Their goal was to create the Olivenhain Dam and Reservoir. This vital project aimed to protect the region from severe water shortages. Construction took nine years. The dam built with roller-compacted concrete is designed to withstand a magnitude 7.25 earthquake.

The reservoir holds 24000 acre-feet of water. That’s enough water for 50000 families for a whole year. But the water is only for emergencies. The creation of the dam and reservoir however also gave birth to Elfin Forest. The reserve uses recreational opportunities to give back to its community.

They offer talks workshops classes and educational hikes for all ages. Group tours and student programs promote environmental awareness. Elfin Forest is more than just trails. It’s a journey through diverse ecosystems. Oak riparian oak woodland coastal sage scrub and chaparral vegetation thrive here. Many endangered or threatened plant and animal species call this place home.

Hiking trails at Elfin Forest range in difficulty. Beginners and avid hikers alike will find trails to enjoy. The trails offer stunning views. You can see the Pacific Ocean Lake Hodges the Channel Islands the Coronado Islands. The Laguna and San Bernardino mountain ranges are also visible from these vantage points. Hiking sticks and bicycle bells are available to borrow at the entrance. Please share and return them. There are also trash cans and doggy bag dispensers to help keep the reserve clean. Remember to bring extra water. A water fountain exists at the top of the hill but you should stay hydrated.
