“Elephant Trees” is quite the curious name isn’t it? Especially since we are standing here surrounded by what appears to be the Adenium obesum, or Desert Rose.

These “Elephant Trees” may not have tusks or trunks, but their thick, bottle-shaped caudexes give them a striking resemblance to the legs of an elephant. You can see why people call them Elephant Trees.

The Adenium obesum is native to the Sahel regions. It is also native to areas south of the Sahara. They also grow in tropical and subtropical eastern and southern Africa and Arabia. It’s quite amazing to think that these plants, perfectly adapted to arid conditions, thrive here in Dubai.

The Elephant Trees before you are succulents. They store water in their swollen base, the caudex. This adaptation allows them to survive long periods of drought. This makes them perfect for the Dubai climate.

Look closely at the branches. You will notice the ovate, grey-green leaves. During the summer months, these Elephant Trees produce beautiful red, pink, or white flowers. The flowers are about 4-6cm across. Sometimes, the flowers bloom even before the leaves appear.

The Adenium obesum is also known by other names. These include Sabi star, kudu, mock azalea, impala lily, and desert rose.

These plants are slow growers. They typically reach a height of about 1.5 meters and a spread of 1 meter.

These trees are popular among botanical gardens. They are also popular among zoos. Even Hollywood has taken notice of the Adenium obesum. You can spot them in movies like RoboCop and Hot Pursuit. They’ve also appeared on television in USA Network’s Queen of the South.

The Elephant Trees you see here stand as a testament to the resilience of nature. They remind us of the beauty that can be found even in the harshest environments. Take a moment to appreciate these unique plants. Consider the journey they have taken to reach this very spot.
