The university’s roots trace back to French Indochina. The Hanoi School of Practical Technology aimed to train skilled workers. After 1954, Vietnam split the school into Technical School I and Technical School II. In 1962, Technical School I became the Electrical and Mechanical High School. This institution further divided in 1966. It created the Electric High School and the Middle School of Mechanical Engineering.
In 2000, the Electric High School I merged with an in-service training school. They formed Electric School No. I under Vietnam Electricity. The Ministry of Education and Training upgraded it to Electricity College in 2001. Finally, in 2006, the Prime Minister permitted the establishment of Electric Power University. It became a key institution under the Vietnam Electricity Corporation and the Ministry of Industry.
Electric Power University has several specialized departments. These include Electrical Systems, Energy Technology, and Automation Technology. You will also find departments for Information Technology, and Electronics – Telecommunications here. Mechanical Technology, Energy Management, and Department Management are also present. Additionally, there is a Finance and Accounting Department, a Department of Basic Science, and a Graduate School of Education. Political Science and Nuclear Power are also studied here.
The university has received several awards. In 1976, it received the Third Class Labor Medal. It received two Second-Class Labor Medals in 1958 and 2001. In 2006, it was awarded the First-Class Labor Medal. In 2011, it received the Third Class Independence Medal. The Prime Minister has also awarded five certificates of merit.
