Can you imagine a high school with a bronzed cleat as a trophy? Here at Eldorado High School, that’s exactly what’s at stake each year. Eldorado High School competes with Chaparral High School in a fierce rivalry. The prize? A bronzed cleat once owned by Los Angeles Rams star, Merlin Olsen. Eldorado High School, established in 1973, is more than just maroon and gold. It’s a melting pot of stories, victories, and traditions. Located in Sunrise Manor, just south of Nellis Air Force Base, this Clark County School District institution has seen its share of history. Eldorado High School wasn’t always the bustling campus you see today. It began on an open desert lot. It opened its doors alongside Chaparral High School, bringing the total number of major high schools in the valley to eight. The school’s design, a windowless enclosed building, a football stadium with a state-of-the-art asphalt running track, and a “sportatorium,” was shared with two other Las Vegas area schools: Basic and Bonanza High Schools. Eldorado High School also housed a temporary ninth-grade campus, Eldorado Preparatory Academy, in the former Bishop Gorman facilities. This helped alleviate overcrowding before students were rezoned to Sunrise Mountain High School. But Eldorado High School is more than its buildings. This school is home to a twelve-time state champion wrestling program, known as the “Dynasty in the Desert.” The Firehawks have claimed state titles in football, boys’ basketball, baseball, and soccer. The school’s NJROTC unit has been recognized multiple times as an Honor Unit. Eldorado High School also boasts an impressive list of alumni. From UFC ring girl Arianny Celeste to NFL running back Steven Jackson, Eldorado High School has nurtured a diverse range of talent. Even Nevada’s 36th Lieutenant Governor, Lisa Cano Burkhead, once graced the halls of Eldorado as an assistant principal. So, as you stand here, before the maroon and gold of Eldorado High School, remember, you’re standing on ground rich with history. This isn’t just a school. It’s a testament to rivalry, achievement, and the enduring spirit of the Firehawks.
