Govan’s heart beats a little stronger within these green confines. Welcome to Elder Park. Isabella Elder gifted this park to the people of Govan in 1885. It was in memory of her husband John Elder. He was a shipbuilding magnate.
Elder Park sits where Fairfield Farm once stood. The farmhouse still stands today. John Elder’s Fairfield Shipbuilding company was just across Govan Road. Those buildings are now the Fairfield Heritage Centre. Isabella Elder wanted the park for “healthful recreation by music and amusement”.
The sandstone entrance gates to Elder Park got a makeover in 2021. A small party celebrated the project’s finish in February 2022.
Elder Park Library sits at the park’s southeast corner on Langlands Road. Andrew Carnegie opened it in September 1903. Isabella Elder gifted it. John James Burnett designed it. The Library is a Category A listed building.
Only the portico remains of the Linthouse Mansion built in 1791.
Two statues grace Elder Park. One honors Isabella Elder. Sir J. E. Boehm created it in 1906. It is Category A listed. Archibald Shannan sculpted the other statue in 1888. It honors John Elder. That statue is Category B listed.
Two memorials also stand in Elder Park. One remembers the SS Daphne disaster of 1883. The other memorial marks the HMS K13 submarine disaster in 1917. Both tragedies took the lives of local shipyard workers. They worked at Stephens and Fairfields respectively.
Elder Park is great for families. It offers swings, slides and climbing frames. Benches offer spots to relax and enjoy the view. Paths wind around for walking and cycling. A pond teems with ducks.
Elder Park is a haven for wildlife. Many bird species call it home. These include herons, cormorants and ducks. Different tree types also grow here. They feed animals like squirrels.
Local residents and visitors protect Elder Park’s environment. Volunteers often clear litter to keep the park clean.
Every Sunday morning, Elder Park hosts a free 2km timed run. It is called Elder Park Junior Parkrun.
Once Govan was a distinct town. It was separate from Glasgow until the 20th century. The elegant pale bronze sandstone pillars mark the grand north entrance to Elder Park. The iron railings and pillars were recently restored. The octagonal lanterns are brand new.
A century ago, Govan was a shipbuilding giant. The Fairfield buildings stretched along Govan Road. Hundreds of workers filled them. Now, the edifice serves as a museum. Shipbuilding still exists near Elder Park. BAE Systems runs an industrial compound. It is visible from the park.
Die-straight paths radiate from the Govan Road entrance. They intersect paths from the library and other roads. John Honeyman designed the park in 1885.
The HM Submarine K13 memorial stands as a sobering reminder. The submarine sank during tests in 1917. Fourteen Fairfield workers died. Govan’s docks have a long history with British naval defense. A ceremony honors the lost every January.
John Elder’s statue stands prominently. He revolutionized shipbuilding at Fairfield yards. John Elder invented the compound engine. He also pioneered heavy engineering workshops. Sadly, he died young at 45. He died nearly twenty years before the park opened.
Isabella Elder funded Elder Park Library’s construction. She wanted it free for Govan’s people. She especially wanted it for workers and women. The library opened on Sundays. It promoted women’s education. The library was recently refurbished and reopened.
The statue of Isabella Elder sits within circular paths. She outlived her husband by 36 years. She used her wealth to establish schools for women. She donated to the university. She funded a local hospice for injured workers. Isabella lived long enough to see Andrew Carnegie open the library.
The old Fairfield farmhouse once stood in the park’s northwest corner. As recently as 1880, a farm sat next to the expanding Govan shipyard.
Only a bleak portico remains of the Linthouse Mansion. It dates back to the 1790s. It served as the shipbuilding firm’s offices. The farmhouse dates back to the 1850s.
The Elder Park boating pond once held model boats and paddlers. Now, wading birds occupy it. These include swans, gulls and ducks.
“The Launch” sculpture stands in the boating pond. George Wyllie created it. It looks like a ship’s hull.
Elder Park is more than just a park. It is a monument to a family’s legacy. It is a place of remembrance. It is a green space for the community. It is a vibrant part of Govan’s story.
