Can you imagine a school where homework is a thing of the past? Right here at the Elbkinder Grundschule, that idea isn’t so far-fetched. Elbkinder Grundschule is nestled in the tranquil neighborhood of Iserbrook, bordering Dockenhuden/Nienstedten and Blankenese. Originally part of the Gesamtschule Blankenese, Elbkinder Grundschule became independent in 2010 and has almost doubled its student body to around 280 pupils. The school is known for its innovative approach to individualized learning, earning it media attention. Elbkinder Grundschule’s unique system incorporates student self-reflection and regular teacher-student feedback. This system, embraced by the school’s 18 teachers, shapes the mornings and has yielded measurable improvements. Surprisingly, this approach resonates with the primarily affluent and academic parents, many of whom are open to new educational ideas. This resonates even with those who initially held more traditional views. The Elbkinder Grundschule occupies a modern and well-maintained building surrounded by several play areas. These areas offer ample space for children to move and explore with numerous trees, bushes, trails, and play equipment. The classrooms are large and bright, each featuring a glass-walled adjoining room. Preschool rooms have direct access to the playground. A large multipurpose room serves as both a break room and assembly hall. The entrance hall, equipped with acoustic elements, doubles as a rehearsal space for the school choir and orchestra. Elbkinder Grundschule also boasts dedicated spaces for music, art, crafts, science, a school kitchen, a textile workshop, and a computer lab. It even has a large playroom specifically for the after-school program. These resources, exceeding Hamburg standards, came from the former special needs school on the same street that closed in 2013. The Elbkinder Grundschule, once the “small school” in Blankenese, now stands as a beacon of progressive education. It continues to attract parents who embrace innovative teaching methods. It’s a place where traditional ideas are challenged and where the possibility of a homework-free future is explored.
