Imagine a thick fog rolling in. A deep foghorn blasts through the air. That sound saved countless ships from running aground. We are standing before the Elbe 3. This bright red lightship has a rich history.

Elbe 3 started its life as the Weser in 1888. It was built at the Johann Lange shipyard. This shipyard was in Vegesack. The ship initially had three masts.

For many years, the ship served as a lightship. Lightships are floating lighthouses. They warned other ships of dangers. Elbe 3 was stationed at different locations. It served as Weser, Bremen and finally Elbe 3. The Elbe 3 position was northwest of Cuxhaven. It was also northeast of Neuwerk. This spot was on a major shipping route.

In 1936, the ship was modernized. A diesel engine was installed. This meant the middle mast was replaced with a chimney. The Elbe 3 used three electric lights. These lights created a distinctive signal. Sailors could recognize it from afar. The light flashed in a specific rhythm. This rhythm was marked on nautical charts.

Life on board wasn’t easy. A crew of eleven lived and worked here. They maintained the lights and equipment. They also kept watch in all kinds of weather.

Elbe 3 was decommissioned in 1977. After a long career, the ship retired. In 1979, it found a new home in Hamburg. It became part of the Oevelgönne museum harbor. Today, the Elbe 3 is the oldest operational lightship in the world.
