The mighty Elbbrücke Geesthacht. A testament to human ingenuity. It spans the Elbe River connecting Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein.
This isn’t just any bridge. This is a vital artery. A crucial north-south connection for Schleswig-Holstein. The B 404 highway runs across it. It’s being upgraded to the A 21 motorway. In southern Schleswig-Holstein it even acts as an eastern bypass around Hamburg.
The Elbbrücke Geesthacht is younger than its sister bridge in Lauenburg. Construction began after 1960. It was built as a beam bridge integrated into the Elbe’s dam system. Clever planning meant the dam’s pillars were wide enough to support the bridge. Both Schleswig-Holstein and Lower Saxony foresaw this need. They funded these preparations wisely.
The 1962 storm surge highlighted the urgent need for another bridge. The Lauenburg bridge was overwhelmed during the catastrophe. The areas north of the Elbe relied on that single overloaded bridge and a railway line. A second crossing was essential.
This bridge wouldn’t just connect B 5 in Schleswig-Holstein with B 4 in Lower Saxony. It was a symbol of connection and resilience. Construction was announced in autumn 1963. The bridge was officially opened on September 14 1966.
The Elbbrücke Geesthacht is more than just a single span. It’s a complex structure. A 175-meter bridge crosses the lock canal. A 550-meter embankment section connects it to the 409.5-meter-long main bridge. That part crosses the Elbe itself. On the Lower Saxony side a 237-meter approach bridge and another embankment complete the connection.
The main bridge’s steel superstructure has eight openings. It’s a through-truss system. The spans range from 50 to 55 meters. The deck is a 16.2-meter-wide orthotropic plate. Impressive engineering for its time.
The lock bridge uses prestressed concrete. It also uses a through-truss system. Spans range from 23.75 to 30.7 meters. Two hollow box girders create the cross-section. The 16-meter-wide roadway sits between them.
To the south the B 404 highway connects to the A 39 Handorf interchange. The B 404 was extended for this connection. From its new end to Rönne near the bridge it’s a freeway. A testament to the Elbbrücke Geesthacht’s significance. It’s far more than just a way to cross the river. It’s a vital link. A symbol of foresight. A testament to engineering. A bridge to the future.
