El Teatro del Barrio isn’t just a theater. It’s a living testament to the power of citizen participation and a cultural hub ignited by the very movement it reflects. Founded in December 2013, El Teatro del Barrio occupies the space of the former Sala Triángulo on Calle de Zurita. It was the brainchild of actor Alberto San Juan, along with economists Mario Sánchez and Gerardo Domínguez, and architects Paloma Domínguez and Iñaki Alonso. They envisioned a space where art and politics could intertwine, a platform where critical discussions could flourish, and where the community could actively participate in shaping cultural and political change. The theater’s very structure echoes this collaborative spirit. It operates as a non-profit cooperative, allowing anyone to become a member with a contribution of 100 euros. El Teatro del Barrio’s performances are anything but conventional. They tackle complex issues like economic power, corruption, the monarchy, and the political system, often with a sharp wit and critical lens.
