Dedicated in 1928 the El Sereno Lutheran Church stands as a testament to faith and community. But did you know its story began elsewhere?

El Sereno itself is a neighborhood with a rich history. Before the church even existed El Sereno was home to the Tongva people. They had a village named Otsungna.

In 1769 Spanish explorers first visited the area. Later Mission San Gabriel Arcángel was founded. The El Sereno area became grazing land.

As railroads came El Sereno started growing. New residents wanted churches and schools. El Sereno Lutheran Church became one of these vital community hubs.

Before its own building the congregation met at the Cameo Theatre. Imagine gathering for services in a theatre. That was before architect Walter Hagedohm designed the beautiful church we see today.

The El Sereno Evangelical Lutheran Church marked a significant step. Services moved from the Cameo Theatre to this dedicated space. This shows the growing importance of the church within El Sereno.

El Sereno experienced many changes over the years. During World War II the population grew. After the war Mexican-American families moved here. The El Sereno Lutheran Church continued to serve its diverse community.

Other churches also have a deep history in El Sereno. A Presbyterian church was built in 1908. All Saints Catholic Church was completed in 1931. These places show the variety of faiths in El Sereno.

Today El Sereno Lutheran Church stands at Eastern Avenue and Twining Street. It is a reminder of the neighborhood’s past. It is a symbol of hope for the future. It remains a welcoming place for all. The El Sereno Lutheran Church is more than just a building. It is a vibrant part of El Sereno’s serene story.
