El Segundo Foursquare Church is part of a larger denomination. It’s called the International Church of the Foursquare Gospel. This church’s roots are deeply entwined with Los Angeles history.
Aimee Semple McPherson founded the Foursquare Church in the 1920s. She was a dynamic evangelist. McPherson opened the Angelus Temple on January 1 1923. It became a cornerstone of the Foursquare movement.
McPherson was a progressive figure. She fearlessly preached the gospel across the United States. This was at a time when women faced significant societal constraints. She used modern communication methods. These methods helped spread her message far and wide.
The Foursquare Gospel itself has four major points. Jesus is the Savior. Jesus is the Healer. Jesus is the Baptizer with the Holy Spirit. Jesus is the Soon-Coming King. These tenets form the foundation of the Foursquare Church’s beliefs.
El Segundo Foursquare Church shares in this history. The Foursquare Church quickly expanded after the opening of Angelus Temple. The first branch church opened in Long Beach California in October 1923. More churches soon followed in Pasadena Santa Monica and Santa Ana.
The Foursquare Church’s commitment to missionary work is significant. In 1927 Aimee Semple McPherson sent Vincente and Teodora DeFante to the Philippines. Today the Foursquare Church has around 100 missionary units worldwide.
Education has always been a priority. In 1923 the Echo Park Evangelistic and Missionary Training Institute opened. It was later renamed L.I.F.E. Bible College. Today it is known as Life Pacific College in San Dimas California.
