Have you ever heard of the story of a little girl who heard a voice calling her name from a tree? This is the story of El Roble, a place where legend and faith intertwine. Here, in this serene cemetery, stands a grand monument to a story from Monterrey’s founding.
El Roble, meaning “The Oak” in Spanish, is more than just a cemetery. It’s a place where history, faith, and an extraordinary story intertwine. We are standing in front of an ancient oak tree. The first missionaries in Monterrey, during the 16th century, used this very tree for a place of worship. It was a place of peace and solitude, a place where they could feel closer to God.
The legend of El Roble tells the story of a young girl who was tending sheep nearby. One day, she heard a voice calling her name. Curious, she followed the sound to a hollow in the oak tree. There, in the hollow, she found an image of the Virgin Mary. The Virgin Mary had been placed there by the missionaries to protect her from the nomadic tribes that roamed the area at the time.
The girl was so surprised that she ran to tell her parents about the amazing discovery. They, too, were awestruck by the appearance of the Virgin Mary, and they knew that they had to protect the sacred image. It is said that the Virgin Mary moved three different times from the hollow of the oak tree to a nearby church, only to return to her original spot in the oak tree. The people took it as a sign from the Virgin Mary. This was her special place and her wish was to have a church built here.
That’s how the magnificent church was built here. Dedicated to Our Lady of the Oak. El Roble has been a place of pilgrimage for centuries. It’s a place where people come to pray, reflect, and find peace. It’s a place where the spirit of the past is still felt, making El Roble an extraordinary place of historical and spiritual significance.
