From El Reducto Bastion one of the enemy’s bomb ships was sunk. During the fight for independence El Reducto Bastion played a crucial role. In 1815 it withstood an assault by Spanish troops under Pablo Morillo. It later facilitated the escape of the Governing Junta. In 1821 the bastion fell to José Prudencio Padilla’s forces during the heroic night assault.

The years weren’t kind. El Reducto Bastion suffered from neglect and decay. Parts were demolished to make way for modernization projects. The construction of the Román Bridge for instance significantly altered its position. A “Gota de Leche” a charitable initiative providing nourishment to underprivileged children once stood here. Even a statue of the Virgin of Carmen stood atop the bastion for a time. Later it was restored. Now El Reducto Bastion stands as a testament to Cartagena’s resilience and its rich history.
