Eleven families walked here. They sought to found a pueblo in 1781. This place is El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument. It marks the city’s birthplace.

El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument, once known as El Pueblo de Los Angeles State Historic Park, holds the oldest part of Los Angeles. This area was once El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles del Río de Porciúncula. The old plaza was the city’s heart. It thrived under Spanish, Mexican, and United States rule. This lasted through most of the 1800s.

King Carlos III ordered the town built. Governor Felipe de Neve directed the construction. The town’s full name was quite a mouthful. It meant The Town of Our Lady Queen of the Angels on the Porciúncula River.

Initially, the pueblo stood southeast of today’s plaza. It was near the Los Angeles River. A flood in 1815 washed it away. They rebuilt it farther from the river. That is where the plaza is now.

The Pueblo grew slowly. In 1781 it had 44 residents. By 1850 it had 1615. The Plaza Historic District was the center of commerce and socializing.

Los Angeles became a city in 1850. This happened after California joined the United States. The city boomed in the 1880s and 1890s. The center shifted south. It moved away from the Plaza along Spring and Main Streets.

The old pueblo is preserved as a historic park. It spans 44 acres. You can find the visitor center in the Sepúlveda House. Las Angelitas del Pueblo offers tours here. They are a volunteer group.

The district features the city’s oldest buildings. They cluster around the plaza. Key buildings include La Placita Church built in 1822 and Avila Adobe. Avila Adobe dates back to 1818. It is the city’s oldest surviving home. Also, there is the Olvera Street market and Pico House built in 1870. The Old Plaza Fire Station from 1884 is also here. Four buildings have been restored as museums.

Archaeological digs found items from before European contact. These included bones, tools, and pottery.

The plaza stands at the heart of the Historic District. Statues honor Charles III and Felipe de Neve. Plaques commemorate the original settlers. These settlers were called Los Pobladores.

La Placita Church was founded in 1814. The existing church was built in 1861. The Old Plaza Firehouse dates to 1884. It is Los Angeles’s oldest firehouse.

Olvera Street is known for its Mexican marketplace. It was once Wine Street. It was renamed for Judge Augustín Olvera. Avila Adobe and Sepulveda House are on Olvera Street.

Avila Adobe was built by Francisco Ávila in 1818. He was a cattle rancher. Commodore Robert Stockton used it as headquarters in 1846.

Sepulveda House was built in 1887. Señora Eloisa Martinez de Sepulveda built it. It blends Mexican and Anglo styles.

David Siqueiros painted the mural América Tropical here in 1932. Its political content led to it being covered up. It has since been restored.

The Plaza Substation, completed in 1904, powered the streetcars. The Pelanconi House, built in the 1850s, is the oldest brick house.

El Pueblo is the final destination of the Old Spanish Trail. It is a site on the Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail.
