Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s El Pegaso! This magnificent sculpture, a powerful symbol of freedom and imagination, stands proudly here in Monterrey. El Pegaso is more than just a statue. It’s a testament to Mexico’s rich artistic heritage and a celebration of the mythical creature’s enduring appeal. You see, El Pegaso has a fascinating history. It’s actually one of four! They were originally designed by the Spanish artist Agustí Querol Subirats and were intended for Mexico City. The sculptures made a grand entrance, arriving from Spain to Veracruz in 1911. They were first placed atop the National Theater, their bronze wings spread wide against the sky. But their journey didn’t end there. El Pegaso, along with its three companions, embarked on a series of relocations. In 1922, they were moved to the Zócalo, the heart of Mexico City. There they stood on grand marble bases, gracing the corners of the square’s garden. Finally, in 1933, they found their permanent home in front of the majestic Palacio de Bellas Artes. Their journey reflects the ever-changing landscape of Mexico City itself. El Pegaso reminds us that even in the face of change, art and imagination remain a constant source of inspiration.
